Try out new Olympic sports and hone your skills in more classic events by choosing the play style that suits you best. Motion controls even let you use the Joy-Con controllers to mimic certain movements, like throwing a javelin or drawing a bow!

Invite up to three athletic friends over to your couch and compete for gold in local multiplayer, or connect multiple consoles to play against three other players in local wireless mode. You can also play online and try to set new Olympic records against up to seven opponents in all kinds of events.

Defend your colors with a prestigious selection of characters from the Super Mario and Sonic universes, including Yoshi, Amy Rose, Luigi, Dr. Eggman, and many more! Since characters have a natural aptitude for certain disciplines, choose the one that will help you reach the top.

Transported to the past

In Story Mode, you’ll travel back to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics! After being sucked into a magical game console, Mario, Sonic, Bowser, and Dr. Eggman find themselves competing in a retro 2D version of the Tokyo Olympics of yesteryear.

Join Mario and Sonic as they explore 1960s Tokyo, and compete in retro versions of classic Olympic events, such as the 100-meter dash and the long jump, while doing your best to return to your world. Meanwhile, in the present, you’ll play as Luigi. To help Mario, Sonic, and the others, he’ll need to visit various venues of the Tokyo 2020 Games to find allies, complete mini-games, and compete in modern events!
